Indian telecom players are targeting a 10 per cent share of all 6G patents and one-sixth of contributions to global standards in the next three years, an official statement said on Saturday.

Telecom industry players have proposed systematically aligning research with “Indian needs” and establishing a vibrant “Standards Community”.

The proposal came up during the second meeting of the Stakeholders Advisory Committee (SAC) on Telecom Service Providers (TSPs), which was chaired by Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Friday.

“Industry leaders proposed to systematically align research with India’s needs and establish a vibrant ‘Standards Community’ targeting a 10 per cent share of all 6G patents and one-sixth of contributions to global standards within the next 3 years,” the statement said.

During the first SAC on telecom operators, certain focus areas were identified.

The meeting held discussions on international standards and India’s involvement in intellectual property and standard essential patent (SEP), connectivity gaps in telecom and quality of telecom services.

“India has already taken several initiatives such as launching Bhart6G Vision and Bhart6G Alliance, a framework to support patents and intellectual property rights, setting up testbeds etc. and the country can aim to achieve 10 per cent of all 6G patents and one-sixth of contributions towards global standards that advance India’s needs. SAC has proposed a three-year roadmap to achieve this,” the statement said.

SAC emphasizes that India must become a leader in advanced technology, with penetration in both wired and smart wireless broadband networks, with reliable connectivity.

“Minister Shri Scindia asked the SAC members to define a critical path to achieve the objectives discussed and define the roles they see for different stakeholders, including the government, in achieving it. He also urged telecom service providers to take all necessary steps to ensure that citizens get good quality telecom services,” the statement said.

Reliance Jio CEO Pankaj Pawar, Vodafone Idea CEO Akshaya Moondra, BSNL Chairman and Managing Director Robert J Ravi, Tejas Networks Chairman NG Subramaniam and industry body COAI Director General SP Kochhar attended the meeting.

Telecom operators sought a supportive policy framework to encourage investment on the path to 100 percent broadband coverage in the country.
