India’s first Vande Metro between Bhuj and Ahmedabad to transform intercity travel: Railways

India’s first Vande Metro, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate virtually on Monday in Gujarat, is all set to transform intercity travel with its advanced medium-distance capabilities, the Railway Ministry said. While PM Modi is in Ahmedabad, the train will start from Bhuj and reach Ahmedabad, covering a distance of 359 km in 5.45 hours.

For commuters, its regular service will start from September 17 from Ahmedabad and the entire journey will cost Rs 455. “While the other metros cover only short distances, Vande Metro trains will connect cities from the heart of the city to the peripheral towns,” the ministry said.

He added that the word ‘metro’ gives an impression of an urban landscape, however, Vande Metro was conceptualised incorporating numerous advancements.

In a comprehensive overview of the Vande Metro and other metros operating in the country, the ministry said: “The Vande Metro operates at a maximum speed of 110 km/h, offering faster acceleration and deceleration for passengers. This speed advantage ensures faster travel and greater efficiency.” It added: “With ergonomically designed seats, fully air-conditioned cabins and modular interiors, the Vande Metro definitely proves superior to other metros.”

Highlighting its safety aspects, the Railway Ministry said Vande Metro is equipped with advanced safety systems like KAVACH for collision avoidance, fire detection and aerosol fire extinguishing, along with emergency lights.

As far as accessibility is concerned, according to the Ministry, it has been designed with inclusion in features such as Divyangjan-friendly toilets, a fully sealed flexible walkway and catering facilities, among others.

Highlighting its superior technology, the Ministry said Vande Metro incorporates cutting-edge technology, including suspended propulsion and advanced braking systems, offering a smoother ride.

“With 12 carriages with a capacity of 1,150 passengers, the Vande Metro offers a number of innovative features. It features automatic double-leaf sliding doors, similar to those on urban metro trains, and a fully sealed flexible walkway that ensures a dust-free, silent and rain-proof interior,” the ministry said.

A significant improvement, according to the Ministry, over traditional suburban trains and metro cars is the modular design of the Vande Metro, which includes ejector-based vacuum evacuation toilets.

He noted that the Vande Metro is designed to connect cities within a 150-kilometre radius, providing efficient and comfortable journeys of approximately 3 to 4 hours.

“Vande Metro facilitates seamless end-to-end movement of passengers and reduces crowding in individual coaches. The semi-permanent couplings, similar to those in Vande Bharat trains, provide a bump-free travel experience,” the Ministry said.
