India’s holdings of US Treasury bonds hit a record $241.9 billion in June

India’s investment in US government securities hit a new high of $241.9 billion in June, marking the third consecutive month of increased exposure. This is up from $237.8 billion in May and is higher than the year-ago June figure of $235.4 billion.

Japan remains the largest holder of U.S. securities, with more than $1.11 trillion, followed by China with $780.2 billion. The United Kingdom and Luxembourg hold $741.5 billion and $384.2 billion, respectively.

India ranks 12th among the largest holders of US government securities, ahead of countries such as Taiwan, which holds $265.9 billion. Other major investors include Canada with $374.8 billion, the Cayman Islands with $319.4 billion, Belgium with $318 billion, Ireland with $308 billion, France with $307.2 billion and Switzerland with $287.1 billion.

The global economic outlook is marked by high inflation and geopolitical tensions, but the U.S. economy showed resilience with an annual growth rate of 2.8 percent in the June quarter, improving from 1.4 percent growth in the first quarter of 2024. The IMF’s World Economic Outlook Update projected a global growth rate of 3.2 percent for this year.
