International Brotherhood of Teamsters refuses to endorse Trump or Harris for U.S. president

Washington: The International Brotherhood of Teamsters on Wednesday refused to endorse Kamala Harris or Donald Trump for president, saying neither candidate had enough support from the 1.3 million-member union.

“Unfortunately, none of the leading candidates were able to make serious commitments to our union to ensure that the interests of workers are always put before those of big business. Business “We are committed to ensuring that our employees are protected,” Teamsters President Sean M. O’Brien said in a statement.

“We sought commitments from both Trump and Harris not to interfere in critical union campaigns or core Teamster industries, and to respect our members’ right to strike, but we were unable to obtain those promises.” Vice President Harris met with a Teamsters panel on Monday, having long courted organized labor and made supporting the middle class her central policy goal. Trump also met with a Teamsters panel and even invited O’Brien to speak at the Republican National Convention, where the union leader railed against corporate greed.

The Teamsters said Wednesday that internal polling of its members showed Trump holding a lead over Harris.

The Teamsters’ decision not to endorse Harris came just weeks before the Nov. 5 election, much later than other major unions like the AFL-CIO and United Auto Workers that decided to back Harris.
