Indore: Is garlic a vegetable or a spice? Madhya Pradesh The Supreme Court has put an end to the debate over whether garlic should be classified as a vegetable or a spice. The court’s decision comes after a long dispute between farmers and traders.
In a recent hearing at the Indore court of Madhya Pradesh The High Court has ruled that garlic should be classified as a vegetable and can be sold in grocery stores for the benefit of traders.
In 2015, a farmers’ organization in Madhya Pradesh The state’s agriculture marketing board requested that garlic be classified as a vegetable. However, within a few months, the agriculture department reclassified garlic as a spice under the Agricultural Produce Market Committee Act, 1972. This decision affected the vegetable brokerage commission across the state, prompting the Potato, Garlic and Onion Brokers Association to file a case in the Indore court in 2016, requesting that garlic be recognised as a vegetable.
In 2017, the court ruled in favour of the association, but this decision sparked a controversy, with allegations that it favoured traders at the expense of farmers. Mukesh Somani filed a review petition in connection with this judgment in 2017. The case was heard by Justices Dharmadhikari and Venkataraman in the Indore court, and their ruling has put an end to this long-standing debate.
