When was the ‘Knights of Malta’ passport born?
Originating as a religious order of chivalry around 1099 in Jerusalem, the Knights were granted the Maltese archipelago by the King of Spain in 1530. However, their rule was interrupted in 1798 when Napoleon Bonaparte expelled them. Today, the Order is headquartered in Rome and is actively involved in humanitarian efforts, providing aid in refugee camps and disaster-affected areas in more than 120 countries.
The Knights of Malta began issuing passports in the 13th century for their diplomats, which served as official documents during international travel. Currently, approximately 500 of these striking crimson passports are in circulation among members of the Sovereign Council and their families, specifically for diplomatic missions.
What stylistic changes have been made to this passport?
The modern passport has an elegant design and features gold lettering that reads “Ordre Souverain Militaire de Malte” and a crest on the cover. Inside, its 44 pages are adorned with a filigree of the Maltese cross, symbolizing the rich heritage of the Order.
Passports are issued to members of the government for their term, which normally lasts four years. The Grand Master’s passport has the longest validity and reflects his elected term of up to ten years.
