ISRO advances lunar and human space missions, prepares Chandrayaan-4 and Gaganyaan tests for December

The Indian Space Research Organisation (Islamic Organization of Russia) is moving ahead with its lunar exploration and space missions, gearing up for the Chandrayaan-4 and Chandrayaan-5 missions. ISRO Chairman S. Somanath has confirmed that the designs for these missions have been finalized and are awaiting government approval. These missions aim to build on the success of Chandrayaan-3, which achieved a historic landing near the Moon’s south pole, making India the first nation to do so. The new missions will further expand India’s lunar exploration capabilities.

In parallel, ISRO Mission structureIndia’s first manned space flight is also moving ahead. The unmanned test of the mission is planned for December, and all stages of the rocket are already at the Sriharikota launch site. The crew module is currently being integrated at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, and the service module is being prepared at the UR Rao Satellite Centre. The crew escape systems are being transported to the launch site. The December launch is dependent on final integrations and testing being completed on time.

Training of the selected astronauts, called “Gaganyatris,” for the Axiom-4 mission to the International Space Station (ISS) is underway in the United States. Their training, which will last three months, includes additional sessions in Europe and other American facilities. The Axiom-4 mission is scheduled for mid-2025, marking a major milestone for India’s space program.

Furthermore, ISRO’s Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) programme has reached a new stage with the success of the third development flight. The technology is now ready for commercialisation, and ISRO is in the process of transferring it through a consortium of companies. Several companies have expressed interest, and ISRO has received a request for proposal to proceed further. The selected company will collaborate with ISRO for two years to facilitate technology transfer and integration.
