‘It’s better to die…’: Bangladeshi journalist found dead in Dhaka Lake

Dhaka: The body of Sarah Rahanuma, a 32-year-old television journalist, was recovered from Hatirjheel Lake in Dhaka on Wednesday, according to media reports. Rahanuma, a newsroom editor at Gazi TV, was found floating in the lake and was declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 2:00 am.

Inspector Bachchu Mia of DMCH police outpost confirmed the recovery of Rahanuma’s body. Passersby who discovered his body pulled him out of the lake and took him to the hospital.

A man named Sagar, who took Rahanuma to the hospital, said, “I saw the woman floating in the Hatirjheel lake. She was later taken to DMCH, where doctors declared her dead.”

Before his death, Rahanuma posted a message on Facebook tagging Fahim Faysal and saying, “It was nice to have a friend like you. God bless you always. I hope you fulfill all your dreams soon. I know we made many plans together. Sorry we can’t fulfill our plans. May God bless you in all aspects of your life.”

In another post, he wrote: “It is better to die than to live a life resembling death.”

Inspector Bachchu Mia said the body is currently at the DMCH morgue and an investigation will be conducted to ascertain the cause of death.

Sajeeb Wazed, the son of the deposed prime minister who resides in the United States Sheikh Hasinacommented on the incident, calling it “another brutal attack” on freedom of expression in BangladeshWazed posted on X: “Rahmuna Sara, editor of Gazi TV’s newsroom, was found dead. Her body was recovered from Hatirjheel Lake in Dhaka city. This is yet another brutal attack on freedom of expression in BangladeshGazi TV is a secular news channel owned by Golam Dastagir Gazi, who was recently arrested.

Rahanuma had gone to work on the day of the incident but did not return home that evening. Her husband, Sayed Shuvro, informed Somoy News that she had expressed her desire to separate from him and that they had planned to finalize their divorce at a Kazi office, which they were unable to do due to the current situation in the country.

The circumstances surrounding Rahanuma’s death remain unclear as investigations are ongoing.
