‘It won’t be easy to get Aadhaar in Assam’: CM imposes new condition, has NRC connection

Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a new condition for applying for Aadhaar card in Assam

Guwahati City: Assam Prime Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday announced a new condition for applying for Aadhaar Card in the state. He said that all new Aadhaar card applicants in the state will be required to submit their National Registry of Citizens (Consumer Regulatory Commission) application receipt number.

“Applications for Aadhaar cards are more than the population… This indicates that there are doubtful citizens and we have decided that new applicants will have to submit their NRC application receipt number (ARN),” PTI quoted him as saying.

The chief minister said the move will “stop the influx of illegal foreigners” and the state government will be “very strict” in issuing Aadhaar cards.

“It will not be easy to get Aadhaar in Assam,” he added.

“Submission of NRC application receipt number will not be applicable for the 9.55 lakh people whose biometric data was blocked during the National Register of Citizens (NRC) process, and they will be issued their cards,” Sarma added.

Measures to expel illegal immigrants

The Assam Chief Minister also said that his government would “intensify the process of identifying illegal foreigners as several Bangladeshis have been arrested in the last two months and handed over to the authorities of the neighbouring country.”

He wrote: “We are intensifying efforts to remove illegal immigrants from Assam. The state government is initiating a series of coordinated actions including increased surveillance, closer coordination with central agencies and increased deployment of force, among others.”

Since January 2024, Assam has identified 54 illegal immigrants – 48 in Karimganj district, 4 in Bongaigaon district and one each in Haflong GRP and Dhubri district. Of these, 45 persons have been deported while nine were arrested in Karimganj.

Meanwhile, the Assam government, in a detailed order, directed the Assam Police Border Organisation to take all necessary preventive and precautionary measures to intensify detection and proactively curb the movement of illegal immigrants.
