J-K Assembly Polls: Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge in Jammu today; to explore Congress party’s alliance possibilities

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi will begin their two-day visit to Jammu and Srinagar today to take stock of the party’s preparations for the upcoming assembly elections in the Union Territory.

The two leaders are also expected to explore possibilities of alliances with regional parties. National Conference (NC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). The two parties are part of the INDIA bloc but are rivals in Jammu and Kashmir.

The visit follows a meeting held on Monday with chief secretaries, in-charges and members of the selection committee of four poll-bound states.

On the first day today, the two leaders will be in Jammu The leaders will travel to Srinagar on Wednesday afternoon to continue their engagements and will hold a press conference there on Thursday.

Jammu and Kashmir The state of Jammu and Kashmir is all set to hold its first Assembly elections in a decade to elect a government after more than six years of central rule. The last Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir were held in 2014.

Voting will take place in three phases The first round will be held on 18 September. The next two rounds will be held on 25 September and 1 October. The results will be announced on 4 October. Up to 24 seats will be up for vote in the first round on 18 September.

Alliance between Congress and North Carolina in the past

While there is no confirmation of any meetings between the Congress leaders with the NC or the PDP leadership in the erstwhile state, the grand old party has in the past formed a coalition government with the NC.

The CN won the 2008 Assembly elections, with 28 seats, and formed a coalition government with the Congresswhich had won 17 seats in the 87-member House that then also included Ladakh.

NC Vice President Omar Abdullah said in Srinagar on Monday that the party was ready to start negotiations with the Congress party.

After the meeting of the selection committee members in Delhi on Monday, Congress General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal He had told reporters that the Congress is “very much in favour of an alliance” in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Our aim is to defeat the BJP. We should have a BJP-free government. That is our preference and we are open to it. I hope everyone will think that way,” he said.
