James Anderson praises Virat Kohli, says Indian is probably the best finisher and white-ball batsman of all time

Retired England cricketer James Anderson has heaped praise on Indian stalwart Virat Kohli. Anderson spoke about Kohli on the latest episode of the BBC cricket podcast Tailenders. Anderson is a regular contributor to the podcast along with Greg James and Felix White.

According to Anderson, Kohli is probably the greatest white-ball finisher and batsman of all time.

“His (Kohli’s) ability to chase records is absolutely phenomenal. I don’t know if there has been a better batsman in the history of the game,” Anderson said.

The Anderson-Kohli rivalry has been one of the most enthralling batsman-versus-bowler duels in modern cricket. While Anderson was an active cricketer, he dismissed Kohli 7 times in Test matches. But it wasn’t all one match as Kohli, on the other hand, managed to score 305 runs at an average of 43.57 and a strike rate of 42.95.

Anderson retired from cricket last month. His last Test match was against the West Indies at Lord’s. The fast bowler ended his career as the third most wicket-taker in the history of Test cricket. Anderson took 704 Test wickets in his career.

“…batting second and chasing scores, in 50-over cricket in particular, the number of hundreds in the second innings of the game, chasing scores is ridiculous,” Anderson continued.

Kohli holds the record for the most hundreds in ODI cricket. The batting superstar has hit 50 ODI hundreds, of which 27 have come in the second innings. Of the 27 hundreds Kohli has hit in run chases, 23 have resulted in victory for India.

“…his self-confidence is very high,” Anderson said.

“…Kohli bats at third and plays those big innings. Michael Bevan was famous for those 50s, 60s and being there till the end. Kohli hits big scores to get the team over the line. I honestly can’t think of a better finisher and potentially a lot better white-ball players.” Anderson explained the reason why he rates Kohli so highly.

Kohli retired from T20Is soon after India won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in June by beating South Africa. The legendary player was next seen in action in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka.
