Earthquake hits parts of Kashmir Valley
Srinagar: Four consecutive earthquakes occurred in the Kashmir Valley on Tuesday morning, with the strongest being a 4.9 magnitude earthquake that struck at 6:45 am. Strong tremors were felt in several parts of the state as the quake hit Baramulla and surrounding areas.
The other earthquakes measured magnitudes 4.4 and 4.8 on the Richter scale.
The four earthquakes occurred in a matter of minutes and caused panic among the inhabitants of the area, who left their homes to protect themselves. Some moved to safer places in anticipation of more tremors.
The first tremors were felt at 6:45 am on Tuesday and within just four minutes, another strong earthquake was reported. Residents of Baramulla, Bandipura, Sopore, Srinagar, Soyibug and Skardu felt the tremors.
The National Seismological Centre confirmed in a post on X that the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.9 and occurred at 06:45:57 IST. The epicentre was Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir.

Videos showing the impact of the quake have appeared on social media. While no casualties have yet been reported, the tremors were strong enough to shake the ground and force people to leave their homes.
Two of the four earthquakes were strong, while the other two were smaller and could be aftershocks. The two earthquakes had a magnitude of 4.4 and 4.9 on the Richter scale.
People took to social media platform X after feeling the tremors. One user wrote: “Earthquake rocks Kashmir Valley, causing tremors to be felt across the region. We pray for everyone’s safety and well-being.” Another post read: “Hope everyone is safe in Kashmir.”
Residents in the affected areas experienced tremors lasting several seconds, causing temporary disruptions to their daily activities.
This comes just two days after the world witnessed a powerful earthquake when the Shiveluch volcano erupted following a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck off the east coast of Russia. Visual assessments indicate that the ash plume is rising up to 8 kilometres above sea level and the volcano has released a lava flow.
Shiveluch Volcano is located approximately 450 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a coastal city with a population of about 181,000 in Russia’s Kamchatka region.
