On August 7, following an exchange of fire with terrorists in the evening of August 6, security forces launched a search operation in Khaneed area of Basantgarh in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir. Following information about suspicious movements in the area, a search and destroy operation (SADO) was launched on August 6.

The group consists of three to four terrorists whom we are trying to neutralise at the earliest,” added the DIG of Udhampur Reasi Range.

Regarding the geographical conditions of the area, he said, “This area has mountainous terrain and dense coniferous forests. The weather these days is also cloudy and rainy. There is fog, so our visibility is limited.”

Meanwhile, on August 6, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said there were two terrorist attacks on pilgrims and 14 casualties reported during the last five years in the country.

Replying to a question raised by Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State Rai said that the central government has framed standard operating procedures (SOPs) and has also implemented them, particularly for the safety of pilgrims in Jammu and Kashmir. He added that adequate security arrangements have been put in place in coordination with all security agencies for the safety of pilgrims.
