Jannik Sinner wins US Open men’s singles Grand Slam title and makes history at Flushing Meadows

Jannik Sinner has beaten the crowd favourite, American Taylor Fritz, at Flushing Meadows. Sinner’s victory is historic as he becomes the first Italian tennis player to win a Grand Slam singles title. The world number one tennis star beat Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 to win the men’s championship at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Sinner lost the first set and had a slow start, but that didn’t stop him from achieving a comeback win against Fritz. It’s a big positive for Sinner as he has been on the radar after being exonerated in a doping case after testing positive twice for anabolic steroids.

“I had it and I still have it a little bit in my mind. It’s not that it’s gone, but when I’m on the court, I try to focus on the game, I try to handle the situation in the best way possible… It wasn’t easy, that’s for sure, but… I tried to stay focused, and I think I’ve done a great job, staying mentally there in every point I play.” said Jannik Sinner.

It was a hostile environment for Sinner as the chants of ‘USA’ soared throughout Arthur Ashe Stadium. There was also a notable celebrity attendance, with pop sensation Taylor and NFL star athlete Travis Kelce seen in the stands.

Taylor Fritz’s loss will extend the US Open’s Grand Slam title drought of 21 years. The last American to win a Grand Slam title was Andy Roddick in 2003. Despite Fritz’s all-round effort, he was no match for Jannik Sinner. 2024 is noteworthy because it was the first year since 2002 in which none of the Big Three (Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and the retired Roger Federer) had at least one major championship. Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have shared all four Grand Slam titles this year, winning two each.
