Jay Shah elected as next ICC president, to take office on December 1

BCCI secretary Jay Shah will take over as the next ICC president in December after emerging as the only candidate for the high-profile post, cricket’s world governing body announced on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old will succeed incumbent President Greg Barclay, who decided not to run for a third consecutive two-year term. Jay Shah was the only candidate for the post of ICC president.

“On 20 August, it was announced that the current ICC President, Greg Barclay, would not seek a third term and would step down at the end of his term in November,” the ICC said.

Notably, Jay Shah became the fifth Indian, after the late Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar, to be elected to the high-profile post. He is also the youngest president of the ICC.

The ICC is the world governing body for cricket, with over 100 members, and is responsible for organising global events such as the World Cup.

“I am committed to working closely with the ICC team and our member countries to continue to globalise cricket. We are at a critical juncture where it is increasingly important to balance the coexistence of multiple formats, promote the adoption of advanced technologies and introduce our flagship events to new global markets. Our aim is to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever before,” said Jay Shah in a statement released by the ICC.

“While we will build on the valuable lessons learned, we must also embrace new ideas and innovations to increase the love for cricket across the world. The inclusion of our sport in the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 represents a significant turning point for the growth of cricket, and I am confident it will propel the sport forward in unprecedented ways,” he added.

Jay Shah will step down as BCCI Secretary, a position he has held since 2019, during the Annual General Meeting of the Board of Directors scheduled for late next month or in October.

Jay Shah is currently the head of the ICC’s most powerful subcommittee, Finance and Commercial Affairs (F&CA), a position he assumed in 2022.
