Jay Shah shares important announcement on Mohammed Shami’s return to Indian team: ‘We need him in…’

Veteran Indian off-spinner Mohammed Shami has been out of action for some time after suffering an ankle injury during the 2023 ODI World Cup. Shami has undergone surgery and is recovering at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. While he has been seen bowling in the NCA nets, there is no concrete timeline for his return.

BCCI Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar Agarkar had earlier hinted that Shami could return to the Indian team during the two-match Test series against Bangladesh next month. Speaking to the media, Agarkar said, “September 19 is the first Test and that was always the target. I don’t know if that is his recovery timeline, I will have to ask the NCA guys about that,” he had said before India’s departure for the Sri Lanka tour in July.

Jay Shah confirms Mohammed Shami’s return to Indian squad:

Speaking to The Times of India, Shah confirmed that Shami is expected to be fit and return during the five-match Test series against Australia later this year. The Men in Blue have outclassed their opponents in the last two Border Gavaskar Trophies in Australia and will look to continue the trend this time around.

“Our team is already well prepared. We have rested jasprit bumrah “For a while now. Mohammad Shami is also expected to be fit. This is an experienced Indian team now. Veterans like Rohit and Kohli are in form,” Shah told the Times of India.

“Your question about Shami is correct… he will be there because he has experience and we need him in Australia,” the BCCI secretary added.

It is noteworthy that Shami would have to prove his worth in domestic cricket before being called up to the Indian squad for the Australia series. According to a PTI report, Shami has not been selected for the upcoming Duleep Trophy as there is little chance of the player recovering in time for the domestic tournament.
