Jharkhand ex-CM Champai Soren lists three options amid buzz of joining BJP: ‘After so much insult…’

Jharkhand Assembly Elections: Former Jharkhand Chief Minister and JMM leader Champai Soren on Sunday said he had three options going forward, which did not categorically specify whether to join the BJP. Soren tweeted: “…After so much insult and scorn, I was forced to look for an alternative path. With a heavy heart, I told the legislative party meeting that a new chapter of my life will begin from today.” The JMM leader had landed in Delhi on Sunday amid speculation that he would join the BJP ahead of the Jharkhand Assembly elections.

“I had three options in this matter. First, to retire from politics; second, to form my own independent organisation and third, if I found a partner in this journey, to go ahead with him. From that day till today, and till the next Jharkhand Assembly elections, all options are open to me in this journey…” Soren added.

Champai Soren had been appointed Chief Minister of Jharkhand when Hemant Soren was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate for corruption. As soon as Hemant Soren was released from jail, he regained the post of Chief Minister, removing Champai Soren.

Listing out the insults and humiliation he received, Champai Soren narrated, “The day after Hul Diwas, I came to know that all my programmes for the next two days had been postponed by the party leadership. One of them was a public programme at Dumka, while the other was to distribute appointment letters to PGT teachers. On enquiring, I came to know that the coalition had called a legislative party meeting for July 3, till then you cannot attend any programme as CM. Can there be anything more humiliating in a democracy than a Chief Minister’s programmes being cancelled by someone else?” Soren said.

Champai Soren regretted the absence of the active voice of JMM founder Shibu Soren and wrote, “The supremo above me is no longer active in politics due to health issues, so what choice did I have? Had he been active, perhaps the situation would have been different.”

“Though the Chief Minister has the right to call a meeting of the legislative party, I was not even informed of the agenda of the meeting. During the meeting, I was asked to resign. I was shocked, but I had no ambition for power, so I resigned immediately, though my heart was shaken by the blow to my self-esteem,” Champai Soren wrote in Hindi.

“This is my personal struggle, so I have no intention of involving any party member in it or causing any harm to the organisation. We can never even think of harming the party which we have nurtured with our blood and sweat. But such circumstances have been created that…” Champai Soren said on Sunday.

Champai Soren left for Delhi on Sunday amid speculation that he might join the BJP. Soon after landing in Delhi, Soren told reporters that he had not met any BJP leader and was in the national capital on a “personal” visit.

Some media outlets on Friday claimed that Soren may join the saffron party ahead of the Jharkhand assembly elections.
