JNU Vice-Chancellor Santishree D Pandit on Wednesday met the students protesting against the university’s alleged insensitive attitude to their various demands, including hike in scholarship amounts, and urged them to end their hunger strike which has entered the tenth day.

Students have been demanding that the VC meet and address their charter of demands since August 11.

Their demands also include a caste census, lifting of the ban on campus protests and withdrawal of procedural inquiries initiated against students for participating in campus protests.

In a purported video, the VC of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is seen trying to convince the protesters to end their hunger strike.

“I am doing my best for all of you. You all are like my children. I am requesting you to end this strike. It makes me feel bad. Even I come from a backward class and I know the struggle you had to face to reach this point…” Pandit is heard telling the protesters.

In the video, the VC is seen requesting Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) president Dhananjay to end the hunger strike.

Regarding the demand to withdraw judicial investigations against the students, Pandit said, “I cannot go against the court. I have revoked the sanctions imposed on several students. But with regard to those of you who went to court, I cannot do anything about it because the matter is sub iudice.”

Dean of Students Manuradha Chaudhary and Medical Director Fouzia Firdous Ozair were also present at the protest site.

Several students had to end their hunger strike after their health deteriorated.

On Monday, the JNU health centre referred two students to AIIMS after their condition worsened. Both refused treatment to continue their protest.
