Job openings: Government portal offered more jobs than those sought in FY24 – 1.09 crore as against 87.27 crore

Vacancies posted on the government’s job portal, the National Careers Service (NCS), showed an interesting trend. NCS data shows that in the 2023-24 financial year jobs available through the portal were significantly higher than Job seekers.

The number of job seekers registered through the portal in FY24 is 87,27,900 as against job offers of 1,092,4161, according to NCS data.

The data also suggests that in FY 2024, the number of available jobs on the portal increased by 214 per cent, or almost three times, over the previous year. The job vacancies posted on the portal by employers were 1,092,4161 in FY 2024, as against 34,81,944 in FY 2023. However, on the other hand, the growth in job seekers was a mere 53 per cent, from 5,720,748 in FY 2023 to 8,720,900 in FY 2024.

A senior government official said rising job vacancies mean higher growth in the economy. On March 30 this year, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in Mumbai that India could grow 8 per cent or more in fiscal 2024.

“We have had three quarters of growth above 8 per cent and hopefully the fourth quarter ending tomorrow will also be 8 per cent or above 8 per cent, resulting in 2023-24, we will have GDP growth of 8 per cent or above 8 per cent,” Sitharaman had said.

In fiscal year 24, the largest number of vacant positions listed in the NCS Portal The financial and insurance sector registered 46,68,845 vacancies, an increase of 134 percent compared to the previous year. This was followed by the operations and support sector with 1,446,404 registered vacancies, representing an increase of 286 percent compared to the previous year. The civil and construction sector recorded a surge of 1,175,900 vacancies as compared to just 9,396 vacancies in FY2023. Job vacancies in other service activities saw a 199 per cent increase in FY2024 with 1,070,206 vacancies as compared to 3,58,177 vacancies in FY2023. NCS data also shows that job vacancy growth for the manufacturing industry saw a 526 per cent increase in FY2024 over FY2023 with 6,89,466 vacancies as against 1,10,175. Similarly, significant growth was seen in job vacancies in other sectors such as IT & Communications, Transport & Warehousing, Education and Specialised Professional Services. Employers posted jobs on the NCS portal for people with different skills and educational qualifications.

For students who passed Grade 12, 6,877,532 jobs were posted, which was a 179 percent increase over FY2023. For students who passed Grade 10 or below, 2,704,280 jobs were posted, which was a 452 percent increase over the previous year. For students who obtained an ITI degree and diploma, 4,02,192 jobs were posted in FY2024, which was a 378 percent increase over the previous year.

For graduates, the number of jobs posted on the portal was 7,33,277, which is an increase of 129 percent over FY2023. For graduates with postgraduate, doctoral or post-graduate degrees, the number of jobs posted on the portal was 60,531, which is an increase of 123 percent over FY2023.

Data on the government portal The data suggests that there were enough jobs available for every category of job seekers. The highest demand was for low-skilled and low-paid jobs. The number of active employers on the NCS job portal stands at 15,64,800, which is 89 per cent higher than in FY23. (ANI)
