Kamala Harris On Thursday, Harris accepted her party’s nomination at the Democratic National Convention. As the vice president spoke at the podium, her husband Doug Emhoff and stepdaughter Ella were visibly emotional. With this, Harris became the first black woman and the first Asian American to lead the ticket of a major political party. During her speech, the 59-year-old spoke about her childhood, thanked Joe Biden and also criticized Republican candidate Donald Trump.
“On behalf of all Americans, regardless of party, race, gender or what language your grandmother spoke, on behalf of my mother and everyone who has ever embarked on their own improbable journey… I accept your nomination,” Harris told the crowd.

Kamala Harris began her acceptance speech by thanking her family and President Joe Biden, who endorsed her almost immediately after she dropped out of the 2024 race. “To our President Joe Biden. When I think about the journey we’ve been on together, Joe, I’m filled with gratitude,” Harris said.
“Your journey is extraordinary, as history will show, and your character is inspiring, and Doug and I love you and Jill, and we are forever grateful to you both,” she added. Harris said the path to the nomination was “certainly unexpected, but I am no stranger to improbable journeys.”
The Democratic candidate also recalled her mother’s journey from India to settling in the United States.
“My mother taught me never to complain about injustice, but to do something about it. My earliest memories of our parents together are very happy ones. In the park, my mother would tell me ‘stay close,’ but my father, smiling, would say ‘run, Kamala, run, don’t be afraid, don’t let anything stop you,'” she said.
She said her mother taught her to “never complain about injustice, but to do something about it.”
