Vice President Kamala Harris, in a surprise appearance at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, spoke of the unity that unites Americans around a common vision for their nation’s future. “Tonight, as I look out at all of you, I am struck by the beauty of our diverse nation. We have people from all over America, from all walks of life, united by the shared vision we have for the path our country must take,” Harris, 59, said to resounding applause from thousands of Democratic Party delegates who had gathered for the event.
He continued: “This November, we will unite our voices and, as one people, move forward with optimism, hope and faith, fueled by our collective love for America and the knowledge that we share much more than what divides us.”
Harris is scheduled to deliver her acceptance speech as the Democratic presidential nominee on Thursday, facing former President Donald Trump, the Republican candidate, in the upcoming November election.
“Let’s start by celebrating our extraordinary President Joe Biden. Joe, we are in your debt for your transformational leadership and lifelong dedication to our nation, and we are grateful for all that you will continue to do,” Harris said, honoring President Joe Biden’s legacy.
The crowd at the United Center erupted in applause for Harris.
President Joe Biden, 81, decided last month not to seek reelection and endorsed Harris for president. Following Biden’s endorsement, Harris quickly won the backing of former President Barack Obama and secured the delegate votes needed to become the Democratic nominee.
Harris has made history as the first woman of color and the first Indian-American to lead the presidential ticket of a major American political party.
Former Secretary of State and first lady Hillary Clinton also spoke out Monday, saying Harris has the character, experience and vision to lead America forward.
“Kamala has the character, the experience and the vision to lead us forward,” the 76-year-old, who ran unsuccessfully against Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, told the Democratic National Convention.
