BJP MP from Mandi and actress Kangana Ranaut has received beheading threats from extremist Sikh groups following the release of the trailer of her upcoming film. She plays the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in ‘Emergency’, which is set to release on September 6. After the threatening video went viral, the actress sought help from the police.

In the viral video, a Sikh extremist points to the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and threatens Kangana. He says, “If he (Khalistani militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale) is portrayed as a terrorist in the film, remember what happened to the person (Indira Gandhi) whose film you are making and that was Satwant Singh and Beant Singh. We will offer our head to Santji, and those who can offer their head can also cut off others.”

Kangana seeks intervention from Himachal, Punjab and Maharashtra police

It is noteworthy that Bhindrawale was a Khalistani militant who was killed in Operation Blue Star, following which Indira Gandhi’s bodyguards Satwant Singh and Beant Singh assassinated her on October 31, 1984. Kangana shared the video on X to ask the police to take action. She wrote, “Please look into this,” and tagged the Maharashtra DGP, Himachal Pradesh Police and Punjab Police.

Controversy surrounding ‘Emergency’

Notably, the film has run into trouble as the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has demanded that Kangana’s directorial be banned. SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami has criticised the film and said that Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who has been declared a martyr of the community by Akal Takht Sahib, has come out badly in Emergency.

Faridkot MP Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa, son of Indira Gandhi’s assassin Beant Singh, has also demanded a ban on Kangana’s film, alleging that Sikhs have been “wrongly” portrayed in the film. Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal has also demanded that Kangana’s film Emergency be reviewed by the SGPC before its global release.
