Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’ won’t release on Friday after Supreme Court setback

Bombay: Kangana RanautThe long-awaited movie “Emergency” will not release on Friday as the Bombay High Court has refused to direct the film body to issue the release certificate. The court has clarified that it cannot directly order the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to issue a certification.

Zee Entertainment, which is distributing the film, had earlier filed a petition in the Bombay High Court seeking expedited clearance from the CBFC. However, the court ordered Zee Entertainment to resubmit the film to the CBFC after taking into account the cuts suggested by the board.

The High Court also directed the CBFC to take an appropriate decision on the certification of the film by September 18, and explicitly stated that the Ganpati festival should not be cited as a reason to further delay the process. This order is aimed at expediting the resolution of the issue of certification of the film.

The case was heard by a bench comprising Justices BP Colabawalla and Firdosh Pooniwalla, who also scheduled the next hearing for September 19. The adjournment gives the CBFC time to review the film once again and ensure compliance with necessary amendments.

“Emergency”, which was scheduled to release this Friday, now faces uncertainty over its new release date, depending on the outcome of the upcoming court proceedings and the CBFC’s decision. The film’s production and distribution teams are awaiting further developments to finalise the release schedule.

“Emergency,” a film about former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, written, directed and produced by Kangana Ranaut, was scheduled to release on September 6. However, its release has been delayed due to objections from Sikh organisations regarding the depiction of Sikhs and concerns over historical accuracy.
