BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya shared a video of the exchange on social media, criticising Sibal and the legal team representing the West Bengal government for their apparent insensitivity. “Total insensitivity on display,” Malviya wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Like Mamata Banerjee, the legal team representing the West Bengal government, headed by former Congressman Kapil Sibal, showed no remorse for killing the young doctor twice… Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had to remind Kapil Sibal to ‘not laugh’.”

The laughing incident occurred during a heated exchange between Sibal and Mehta, when the AG highlighted discrepancies in the police criminal record. Mehta, referring to the gravity of the situation, reprimanded Sibal saying, “A girl has lost her life in the most inhuman and undignified manner. Someone has died. Don’t laugh, at least.”

The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the case, which includes allegations against a civic volunteer associated with the Kolkata Police. The Calcutta High Court had directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the matter, with Mehta representing the CBI and Sibal representing the West Bengal government.
