The final day of the 77th Senior National Swimming Championships 2024 ended in an eventful manner with Karnataka once again crowned champions. The cherry on the cake for Karnataka was the creation of a new record in the men’s 4x100m freestyle. Prithvi M, Kartikeyan Nair, Akash Mani and Srihari Nataraj combined to clock 3:28.09 and better Karnataka’s own record of 3:28.16 from 2023. Vinayak Vijay of SSCB led the 400m individual medley in the first 100m butterfly, joined by Dhulipudi Varshith of Telangana and Yug Chelani of Rajasthan Dhulipudi and Yug overtook Vinayak in the next 100m backstroke, but Vinayak clawed his way back into contention in breaststroke. In the final 100m freestyle, Yug Chelani and Mongam Theerdhu Samadev of Andhra Pradesh turned the tables and finished first and second in 4:36.39 and 4:36.44 respectively.
The women’s 200m backstroke was contested Orissa Pratyasa Ray of Bengal led in the first 50 metres but Soubrity Mondal of Bengal fired up the engines to take the lead and held it for the rest of the race to finish first in 2:21.76 and Pratyasa finished second in 2:24.29.
In the men’s 200m backstroke, Nithik Nathella of Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra Rishabh Anupam Das’s was on par with him, Rishabh started to take the lead midway through the race but in the final 50m sprint Nithik overtook Rishabh and took the top spot with a time of 2:03.47. While Rishabh finished second with a time of 2:04.03.
Srihari Natraj shared his experience saying, “It was a great competition, coming back from Olympics “It was a great opportunity to compete with friends. Karnataka put on a great show and retained the title again. I’m sure they would have won without me.”
