KFC launches sign language training program for all employees in India

Fast food chain KFC has launched a sign language training programme for its employees in India, said Moksh Chopra, general manager. KFC India & Partner Countries. The training is mandatory for all KFC employees in the country, including those working at the company’s corporate offices, he told ET.

The company has a workforce of around 17,000 people in 240 cities and 1,200 restaurants.

Designed in consultation with a sign language expert, the first module focuses on the International Sign Language (ISL) alphabets, while subsequent modules focus on regular greetings and phrases that are key to maintaining a sign language conversation.

“Training is part of KFC India’s strategy kshamata program“which aims to nurture people’s potential and close the gender and skills gap,” KFC said in a statement.

Through this program, KFC aims to double the number of Hearing and speech impairment (SHI) employees by 2026.


This year, the company launched the first interactive sign language kiosk that allows people to learn how to order their favourite dishes from different brands and cuisines using Indian Sign Language. “One of the most important steps towards this is to spread the use of sign language and since 2021, our annual #SpeakSign campaign is focused on achieving this goal. This year, we are proud to announce that 100% of our teams will be trained in basic Indian Sign Language, making our restaurants across the country more inclusive,” Chopra said. KFC India’s franchise partners Devyani International Limited and Sapphire Foods India Limited have played a pivotal role in Kshamata’s journey, he said.

“Implementing mandatory sign language training is a forward-thinking approach that will help ensure we are fostering an environment across all our restaurants and offices where people with hearing or speech impairments, whether they are team members or consumers, can interact with confidence,” said Pradeep Das, CEO, KFC, Devyani International Limited.
