Formula 2 driver Kimi Antonelli has been announced as the driver to fill the vacant seat at Mercedes. Following the departure of Lewis Hamilton for Ferrari, young driver Kimi Antonelli will be the one to replace him at the Silver Arrows. Kimi Antonelli yesterday tested a Formula 1 car for the first time when he took part in Free Practice 1 at the Monza circuit in George Russell’s car. The session did not go as Kimi would have hoped, as the young driver ended up suffering a terrible accident that left him out of the session.

Mercedes has been searching for a driver to fill Lewis Hamilton’s shoes since the seven-time world champion announced he was leaving for Ferrari and now the team has its man.
Kimi Antonelli: “Getting to F1 is a dream”
Kimi Antonelli has had a superb career in junior racing, winning the Italian Formula 4 title, the ADAC and the Formula Regional European Championship. He also skipped F3 and went straight into F2 when he signed for Prema Racing. He currently sits sixth in the Formula 2 standings and has two wins under his belt.
“It’s an incredible feeling to be announced as an official Mercedes driver alongside George for 2025.
“Getting into F1 is a dream I’ve had since I was a little boy. I want to thank the team for the support they’ve given me in my career so far and the trust they’ve shown in me. I’m still learning a lot, but I feel ready for the opportunity. I’ll be focused on improving and delivering the best possible results for the team.

“I’m also very excited to become George’s teammate. He came through the team’s youth program like I did and is someone I have enormous respect for.
“He’s super-fast, has won several Grands Prix and has already helped me improve as a driver. I’m looking forward to learning from him and working together to perform on track,” said Antonelli after he was officially announced as a driver for the Mercedes F1 team.
