Meet your fund manager | Devender Singhal, Executive Vice President and Fund Manager, Kotak Mutual Fund

Let’s start with your personal story.
I was born and brought up in Delhi in a family of entrepreneurs and professionals. I am the eldest of three siblings raised in a blended family.

I have a degree in management from Fore School of Management, Delhi. Prior to that, I studied mathematics at Ramjas College, University of Delhi.

How did you come to this job?
In 2001, I got a position at PN Vijay Financial Services’ campus in Delhi. This was the only stock market firm that came to the campus at that time. I worked there for three years, helped launch PMS services, acquired clients, and looked after equity research and fund management. By the time I left the firm in 2004, it was one of the largest PMS offices in the country, managing over Rs 400 crore in assets under management.

I briefly worked in the PMS division of Karvy Stock Broking in Mumbai. I quickly moved to Religare PMS in 2005 and launched and managed their Caterpillar programme. This programme still runs under the Invesco brand.

I joined Kotak Fund Management in 2007 with its PMS division. I moved to Kotak Mutual Funds In 2009 I covered the automotive and consumer sector. I started managing equity funds since August 2015 at Kotak AMC.

What funds are you currently managing?
I am currently managing multi-cap and hybrid strategies at Kotak Mutual Fund. The active funds I am currently managing are as follows: Kotak Multicap (Rs 14,000 crore) Kotak Multi Asset Allocation Fund (Rs 6,800 crore)

Kotak Capital Saving Fund (Rs 6,500 crore)

Kotak Conservative Hybrid (Rs 2,600 crore)

Kotak FoF Multi-Asset Allocator (Rs 1,600 crore)

Kotak Consumption Fund (Rs 700 crore)

Kotak Special Opportunities Fund (Rs 2,200 crore)

Which one is yours? investment philosophy And how would you describe your investment strategy?
I am agnostic as to style fund managerA favorable risk-reward ratio is the foundation of my investments. I use both quantitative and qualitative filters in my investment process. I constantly look for non-linearity in my investment ideas. I am a student of behavioral finance and believe it has a huge impact on the market.

What motivates you when it comes to managing other people’s money?
There is no better feeling than contributing to an investor’s journey towards financial freedom. Every rupee that adds to their portfolio fills me with joy.
