The brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has left the country in shock. Protests by doctors and other citizens have erupted across the country demanding justice for the woman who met a shocking end in a place that anyone considers a second home – her workplace.

As people rally to demand justice for the young doctor, no one wants her more than her heartbroken parents. In an interview with The Guardian, the devastated father said that although his daughter will never return and they will never hear her “voice or her laugh” again, all they can do now is “focus on getting justice for her.”

The father also revealed to The Guardian his struggles and how his daughter had overcome all odds to become a doctor. “We are a poor family and we raised her with a lot of difficulties. She worked very hard to become a doctor. All she did was study, study and study,” he told the Guardian, reportedly over the phone. He added, in the same interview: “All our dreams were shattered in one night. We sent her to work and the hospital gave us her body. It was all over for us.”

According to the Guardian report, the doctor had secured a place at the JNM Medical College and Hospital in Kalyani, West Bengal. Her parents spent a major part of their meager income to fulfil her dreams. The doctor’s father worked as a tailor.

Meanwhile, a bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, also comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, said the identity of the victim was published on various platforms. The apex court said it is bound to issue a court order as social and electronic media have proceeded to publish the identity of the deceased and photographs of the dead body after the recovery of the body. “We accordingly direct that all references to the name of the deceased in the aforesaid incident, photographs and video clips thereof be forthwith removed from all social media platforms and electronic media in compliance with this order,” the apex court said.

Meanwhile, the CBI has asked tough questions to former RG Kar director Sandip Ghosh. Some of the questions to Ghosh were reportedly, “When and how did you come to know about the incident that occurred on the night of August 8-9?”, “When did you reach the hospital after coming to know about the incident?”, “Who told you that it was a case of suicide?”, “On whose instructions was wrong information given to the family? If you did not know, why did you not tell the truth to the family?”, among others.

On the night of August 8-9, a second-year postgraduate student and a medical intern at the R. G. Kar Medical College in Kolkata was brutally raped and murdered. Her body was discovered in the hospital’s seminar room the next morning on August 9. The case has sparked shock and furore across the country, with hordes of people, including doctors, taking to the streets to protest.
