The Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is scheduled to hear the ex officio case related to the Kolkata rape and murder on Tuesday. It will be the first hearing since nationwide protests by doctors demanding justice for the 31-year-old junior doctor who was brutally raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

  • Sandip Ghosh, former principal of Kolkata-based RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, is facing further scrutiny after the West Bengal government on Monday set up a Special Investigation Team to probe financial irregularities at the hospital from January 2021 till now. The move comes after Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials questioned Sandip Ghosh for the fourth consecutive day on Monday.

  • The Delhi-based doctors’ association, representing over 15,000 members, has called for the formation of a committee headed by a former Supreme Court judge to develop a framework to protect doctors and medical staff from violence in public hospitals and healthcare facilities.

  • Meanwhile, according to CBI sources, permission has been granted to the CBI to conduct a polygraph test on the suspect arrested in the Kolkata rape and murder case. On August 18, the CBI team investigating the incident conducted a 3D laser mapping and examination of the emergency ward of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

  • On August 13, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the investigation from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which began its probe on August 14. The High Court order came while it was hearing petitions, including one filed by the victim’s parents, who sought a court-supervised probe.

  • In connection with the acts of vandalism that took place inside the RGK Hospital on the night of August 14, the High Court said that the mob violence at the hospital constituted an utter failure of the state machinery. On August 16, the court directed the police and the hospital authorities to file affidavits detailing the situation.

  • The alleged rape and murder of a female trainee doctor in a seminar room of a government hospital has sparked nationwide protests. The doctor’s body, with severe injury marks, was discovered inside the seminar room of the hospital’s chest department on August 9. The next day, the Kolkata police arrested a civic volunteer in connection with the case.
