New Delhi: The All India Federation Medical Association (FAME) on Monday called for a nationwide shutdown of OPD services from August 13 in protest against the sexual assault and murder of a post-graduate student (PGT) doctor in Kolkata. The incident took place at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, in the wee hours. The doctor was allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered by a civic volunteer, named Sanjoy Roy, who has now been arrested.

“We stand with the protesting doctors across India! We call upon doctors across the country to join this protest from tomorrow! We want justice!” tweeted FAIMA.

FAIMA’s tweet:

Meanwhile, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has demanded a thorough and impartial investigation into the case from the West Bengal government and punishment of the culprits. The IMA has written to Union Minister JP Nadda demanding a detailed probe into the conditions that enabled the crime as well as measures to improve the safety of doctors, especially women, at the workplace.

The IMA had given a two-day ultimatum on the above-mentioned demands. “We submit to you our demand for a safe zone, defined security measures and a central law on violence as deterrent measures. We hope that you will consider our demands favourably in the light of the deteriorating situation on the ground,” the IMA letter reads.

Post mortem report:

According to the autopsy results, the doctor’s death was classified as homicidal and ante mortem, meaning it occurred before she was found. The report confirms that the victim was sexually assaulted, as there was evidence of rape. After the assault, she was killed by strangulation, that is, pressure on the neck, and then asphyxiation, which caused her death.

Reports revealed that the accused had assaulted the victim when she tried to resist and protect herself, before being brutally raped and murdered.

According to the autopsy, cut marks were found on the victim’s hands and face. The report also stated that a strong blow caused her glasses to break and glass fragments to enter her eyes. Head injuries were reported as the accused hit her head against the wall. While doing so, the accused allegedly covered her mouth, which caused more injury marks on her face. The torture continued as the accused strangled the trainee doctor to death. Several injury marks were also found on her private parts, confirming that she was raped.

The incident sparked nationwide protests at medical schools and hospitals across the country.
