Kolkata murder accused: Doctor had drunk alcohol and watched pornography before crime (sources)

Calcutta: Primary investigation into alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor in Kolkata RG Kar College of Medicine revealed that the accused Sanjay Roy He had allegedly consumed alcohol before committing the crime, sources told Times Now.

The body of a woman pursuing post-graduate studies in Thoracic Medicine was found inside the seminar hall of the government-run RG Kar Medical College. The 31-year-old victim hailed from Sodepur and was on duty on Thursday evening when the incident took place. Her half-naked body was found with injury marks. The victim, a second-year post-graduate doctor-in-training, along with four colleagues, had gathered in the seminar hall for dinner while watching Neeraj Chopra’s silver medal. After the meal, her colleagues left, leaving her alone to study. At 3 am, she was seen sleeping in the room. It was around 4 am when Roy allegedly entered the room, sexually assaulted her and when she resisted, strangled her to death. Her lifeless body was discovered at 7.30 am.

The official autopsy report confirmed that the 31-year-old doctor was sexually assaulted. The report details multiple signs of injuries and struggle, including blood stains on her face and eyes, scratch marks all over her body, and heavy bleeding on her private parts. The victim also suffered injuries to her lips, abdomen, right hand and fingers, and a broken collarbone, indicating the violence she suffered.

Police then arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, on Saturday six hours after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to probe the case. Roy, 33, was detained on Friday evening for questioning, which led to his arrest.

The defendant’s phone is full of violent pornography

According to police sources, Sanjay Roy went to a place behind the hospital building at 11 pm on the day of the crime and drank alcohol. Sources said that Sanjay used to watch pornography while drinking alcohol. Police sources told Times Now that Sanjay Roy’s phone was filled with “violent pornographic videos”. Police believed that Sanjay Roy was either mentally ill or a pervert.

Who is Sanjay Roy?

According to a TOI report, Sanjay Roy has been associated with the Kolkata Police since 2019, initially joining as a civic volunteer in the Disaster Management Group. Over time, he managed to secure a transfer to the Kolkata Police Welfare Cell through what are believed to be strategic networks and connections. This transfer allowed him to live in the premises of the 4th Battalion of the Kolkata Police, which eventually led to his posting at the RG Kar Hospital. Roy had regular assignments at the police outpost within the hospital, giving him unrestricted access to different departments.

Crucial evidence leading to arrest

The breakthrough in identifying Roy as a suspect came thanks to a broken earpiece found in the third-floor seminar room of the hospital’s emergency building, where the doctor’s body was discovered. CCTV footage was instrumental in the investigation, as it captured Roy entering the building at around 4am with a Bluetooth device around his neck. Notably, when he left the building 40 minutes later, the earpiece was no longer visible. Further investigation revealed that the device had been paired with Roy’s mobile phone, linking him directly to the crime scene.
