Kolkata rape and murder case: Timeline of events so far

People from all walks of life have been voicing their strong opinions calling on the relevant authorities to investigate the safety of doctors in the country.

The unfortunate death of a post-graduate doctor at RG Kar Medical College Hospital in Kolkata, who was brutally raped and murdered, has shocked the entire country.

Doctors, student organisations and politicians from all over the country have taken to the streets to demand justice for the doctor. People from all walks of life have expressed their strong opinion and have asked the relevant authorities to investigate the safety of doctors in the country.

The medical community and the public have been demanding answers from the government in light of this unfortunate incident. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) launched a nationwide strike which has severely affected medical services.

Here is a timeline of events so far:

  • August 9, 2024: A 31-year-old doctor pursuing postgraduate studies at RG Kar Medical College Hospital in Kolkata was raped and murdered. She was found dead with facial injuries inside the seminar room of the hospital.
  • August 10, 2024: Police arrest accused Sanjay Roy in connection with the rape and murder of the post-graduate doctor. The post-mortem report confirms murder following sexual assault. IMA and protesting doctors demand immediate action.
  • August 11, 2024: The Government of West Bengal Transferred the Superintendent of the College of Medicine and Hospital RG Kar in Kolkata for alleged lapses that led to the rape and murder of a junior doctor inside the hospital premises, ANI reported.
  • 12 August 2024: Principal, RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, Prof. (Dr.) Sandip Ghosh resigns from his post. The Federation of Resident Doctors Associations (FORDA) announces the nationwide suspension of elective services as a sign of protest.
  • August 13, 2024: Protests grow stronger as doctors across the country unite to demand action. HC of Calcutta The government notes that the rape and murder of a woman doctor at the RG Medical Kar College in Kolkata was “so gruesome” and orders the former director of the RG Kar Hospital to take extended leave. Hospital services across the country were affected due to the ongoing protest by doctors.
  • August 14, 2024: CBI takes over accused in custody and investigation begins.

The time is ripe for his intervention,” Asokan told ANI. National Commission for Women (NCW) The NCW has alleged that the RG Medical College and Hospital site where the 31-year-old postgraduate doctor was raped and murdered was undergoing sudden renovations.
