Calcutta: Upset over the absence of the investigating officer and the delay of the public prosecutor during the bail hearing of the main accused in the rape and murder case of Kolkata doctor Sanjay Roy, Sealdah Court He expressed his displeasure and asked whether he should accept the suspect’s bail request.
Additional Judicial Magistrate Pamela Gupta on Friday stressed the gravity of the situation and the need for faster action by the CBI.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) lawyer arrived at the Sealdah court 50 minutes late to oppose Sanjay Roy’s bail plea, claiming that it would hamper the investigation. While the court was kept waiting, ACJM Gupta at one point asked, “Should I grant bail to Sanjay Roy?”
As the lawyer was not present in the court, the magistrate asked the CBI officer to call him. The officer present in the court, who identified himself as the assistant investigating officer, left the courtroom and made a call. On returning, the officer said that the lawyer was on his way. “It is gross negligence on the part of the CBI,” the magistrate said.
A female doctor in training was raped and murdered in a government-run medical facility. Police arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, for his alleged involvement in the rape and murder of the junior doctor.
The Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the second week of August, saying no significant progress had been made in the case.
As protests continue, thousands of women across West Bengal are expected to turn out for the third edition of the ‘Reclaim the Night’ campaign on September 8 at midnight to press their demand for justice.
