Kolkata rape-murder case: Social media platforms ordered to remove posts about victim’s identity

The Ministry of Electronics and IT has asked social media platforms to remove posts related to the junior doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata.

The ministry has also asked the platforms to submit a report on their actions following the removal.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court also ordered that the victim’s name, photos and videos be removed from all social media platforms. The order, passed by a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, highlighted that revealing the identity of sexual assault victims goes against an earlier Supreme Court ruling in the Nipun Saxena case.

Meanwhile, the Kolkata Police, which has faced criticism over the incident, has issued summons to several prominent people, including TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy and former BJP MP Locket Chatterjee, as well as renowned doctors Kunal Sarkar and Subarna Goswami, for allegedly spreading misinformation and revealing the identity of the victim.

Roy had earlier in the day asked the CBI to act fairly and demanded custodial interrogation of the former director of the medical facility and the CP to find out “who and why spread the suicide story”.

Kolkata police have summoned 57 others for allegedly spreading rumours and revealing the identity of the doctor.

The doctor’s body was found on August 9 and a civic volunteer was arrested the next day in connection with the crime. The Calcutta High Court on August 13 ordered the transfer of the investigation of the case from the Kolkata Police to the CBI, which began its probe on August 14.
