Kolkata rape-murder case: Supreme Court slams Wikipedia for displaying victim’s name, orders its removal

The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered Wikipedia to remove the name and photo of a victim in the Kolkata rape and murder case of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The court underlined that revealing the victim’s identity is against Indian law, which protects the privacy and dignity of victims. The order comes out of concerns raised over the display of the victim’s identity on Wikipedia, which is publicly accessible. Indian legal provisions clearly prohibit the disclosure of the identity of a rape victim in any form of media. The court directed Wikipedia to follow the order immediately, ensuring that the victim’s name is not displayed on the site.

The case, which involved a brutal rape and murder in a Kolkata hospital, sparked outrage across the country.

In early August, the Ministry of Electronics and IT, along with the Supreme Court, ordered Social media platforms to delete posts Relating to the identity of the victim.
