Kolkata rape murder case: West Bengal’s young doctors may end their strike

The protesting young doctors in West Bengal are likely to end their ‘stop work’ campaign on Friday and resume normal duties soon. However, their agitation will continue, demanding justice in the rape and murder case of a fellow trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital and better security measures in hospitals. Sources said the meeting of the governing body, which began on Thursday night, concluded this morning. At the meeting, the young doctors decided to hold a demonstration on Friday afternoon. During this time they will be able to announce the withdrawal of the total strike campaign.

A protesting doctor told PTI: ‘The governing body meeting concluded this morning. We have decided to stop working for now, but our protest will continue. We know that a large number of patients depend on government hospitals every day. In view of the problems faced by ordinary patients, some senior doctors asked them to withdraw their entire “stop work” campaign.

The doctor said: “In the afternoon we plan to hold a demonstration and announce our decision to withdraw the total strike campaign.” They said they plan to set a deadline for the state government to implement their demands, after which they will launch an “indefinite fast” until the promises are met. “Precisely in view of the attacks on doctors in several hospitals, we plan to set a deadline for the state government to meet our demands,” he said. If our demands are not met, we will begin a fast unto death.

The junior doctors had again started the ‘Stop Work’ campaign on October 1 after the incident of attack on medical workers by a patient’s family at the Government Medical College and Sagar Dutta Hospital. Earlier, junior doctors had stopped work for 42 days at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 in protest against the rape and murder of a fellow doctor. However, after discussions with state officials, they called off their strike on September 21 and restored essential services with the goal of ensuring safety and effective healthcare.
