Krishna Janmashtami Live Updates: Hello and welcome to the Janmashtami Live Blog. Janmashtami is a sacred and revered occasion that commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna, who is worshipped as the embodiment of divine wisdom and infinite love. Follow this space to catch a glimpse of the celebrations across the country.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna was born in the prison of the demon king Kansa in Mathura as the eighth son of Devaki on this day. Krishna is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Worshipping the infant form of Lord Krishna on Janmashtami, which falls on the Ashtami of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, is believed to remove all sorrows, defects and poverty.

Janmashtami 2024: History

According to the belief system, Kansa, who was the brother of Queen Devaki, was given a prophecy foretelling that her eighth son would ultimately lead to her downfall. Upon learning of this ominous prediction, Kansa took drastic measures and imprisoned both Devaki and her husband Vasudev. Tragically, Kansa proceeded to execute all six of his sons one by one. However, when Kansa attempted to eliminate Krishna, fate intervened. Krishna was discreetly spirited out of the grim prison just in time. King Vasudev bravely crossed the Yamuna River, cradling Krishna in a basket on his head, and entrusted him to the care of his dear friends Yashoda and Nanda in the serene city of Vrindavan.

Vasudev, in a desperate attempt to protect his children, returned with his newborn baby girl on the very day she was born. He intended to present her to King Kansa, hoping that Kansa would spare her life, as the prophecy had specifically mentioned the eighth “son” as the harbinger of Kansa’s death. However, Kansa cruelly threw the innocent girl against a rock. Amazingly, instead of being harmed, she ascended into the air, transforming into the divine goddess Durga, issuing a dire warning about Kansa’s impending doom.

As time passed, Krishna grew into a young man and eventually confronted Kansa and defeated him, thus fulfilling the prophecy and freeing the city from Kansa’s brutal and oppressive rule. The occasion of Krishna Janmashtami serves as a celebration of the love, compassion and pure beauty that Lord Krishna embodies, showcasing the triumph of good over evil and the enduring power of divine grace.

In Krishna’s birthplace Mathura and in Vrindavan, Janmashtami will also be celebrated on August 26, 2024. The festivities here are particularly special, with large crowds of devotees gathering for darshan at the Banke Bihari Temple.

How to observe fasting

Apart from worshipping Lord Krishna, observing a fast is also an important aspect of Janmashtami. From the day before Janmashtami, known as Saptami, it is recommended to avoid tamasic foods like garlic, onions, brinjals and radishes and consume only sattvic foods while maintaining celibacy. On Janmashtami, get up early during Brahma Muhurta, bathe, put on clean clothes and resolve to observe the fast, consuming only fruits or water. Dedicate the entire day to Krishna Bhakti and at midnight, celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna by offering him special delicacies. The fast can be broken the next day.
