As one of the most scenic and accessible treks in the Himalayas, the Kuari Pass Hike It is highly recommended for beginners who want to stretch their legs and enjoy incredible views of the mountains on this adrenaline-filled adventure. Also called the Curzon Trail (it was explored by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India), this pass is legendary for its expansive views of Himalayan peaks such as Nanda Devi and Dronagiri. With the Diwali long weekend in sight, add a few more days to your license and embark on a 6-day adventure in the Himalayas.
Kuari Pass Trek Itinerary
The trek usually lasts 6 to 7 days (including a bumpy but impressive drive from Rishikesh to the base camp and back) covering a distance of approximately 33 kilometers. The highest altitude reached is about 12,500 feet, which is manageable with proper acclimatization. The starting point is different for different trekking groups, but the most famous is Karchi, which can be reached from Rishikesh by shared taxis. The route is a delight in itself as it traverses the tributaries of the Ganges throughout the journey.
From Karchi, you start your trek and reach Akhrotghetta in 5 to 6 hours, where you will camp for the night. The views of Mount Dronagiri are your companion throughout the trek, as you pass through dense oak, deodar and rhododendron forests, teeming with wildlife and snow (if trekking in peak winters). The third day will take you to Khullara meadow which is one of the most famous camps on this trip. Here, under a canopy of stars, you can cook your own food or gaze at your favorite constellations.
From Khullara, you will head to Tali via the impressive Kuari Pass, crossing the highest point of the trek, Kuari Top, which is 13,990 feet. If the weather changes by then, the trail will be covered in snow. From here, the imposing Mount Nanda Devi massif is truly a sight to behold. Another highlight of the trek is Auli, where the trek ends. Auli’s snow-covered slopes and cable car rides offer extra fun for hikers, especially in the winter months. From here, you will be taken to Dhak by taxi.
Best time to visit Kuari Pass
According to experts, the ideal time to do the Kuari Pass Trek is between April to June and September to November. But if it’s snow you’re after, then lace up your boots and head to the Himalayas in the winter months of December to February.
