Lamborghini bets heavily on India’s long-term potential

Italian super luxury car manufacturer Cars Lamborghini expects exponential growth in India with the potential to become a major market in the Asia Pacific region in the long term, driven by the world’s youngest customers, according to a senior company official. With the company selling a record 103 units in India in 2023, Automobili Lamborghini’s Asia Pacific region head, Francesco Scardaoni He said his desire is to cross the 150-unit annual sales mark in the country by 2026.

“In terms of volume, India ranks 14th in the world and sixth in Asia Pacific. In terms of percentage, it is the fastest growing market,” Scardaoni told PTI.

In 2023, Lamborghini surpassed the 10,000-unit mark worldwide and at the same time, in India the company surpassed the 100-car mark. In the first half of 2024, deliveries worldwide continue to show growth compared to the previous year and India follows a similar trend, he added.

Last year, China was Lamborghini’s largest market in the Asia Pacific region with 845 units, followed by Japan (660), Korea (434), Australia (263) and Taiwan (131).

Asked how far India can climb the rankings of its top markets in the region, Scardaoni said: “There is still a long way to go to reach number three, two and one, but again we believe that in the long term for a country like India, it is possible… I think in the medium term India can grow very fast.”

“We believe that India has all the right indicators to think that there will be exponential growth,” he added. Asked when Lamborghini would be able to cross 150 units sold annually in India, he replied, “My wish would be 2026. That would be my wish, when will it happen?” Explaining the logic behind the company’s optimism regarding India, he said, “It is related to the economy. It is the fastest growing economy in the world and it is important to also see that the customers here in India are the youngest among the customers around the world.”

He added that “India is a country of startups, so there are a lot of young customers coming from new economy startups. India has become an incubator for startups.”

The average age of Lamborghini’s Indian customers is below 40 years, while in major markets like the US and Europe the average is between 40 and 45 years.

Additionally, Scardaoni said the Indian government is also putting a lot of effort into developing the country’s roads and infrastructure.

“We see an amazing trend of developing and connecting major cities with new highways, which are huge projects. We believe that once these infrastructures are completed, this will further boost the supercar market,” he added.

Lamborghini sells a range of super luxury cars with prices starting from Rs 3.8 crore in India.

In terms of current Indian demand, he said: “We have a fairly solid situation in India where production is well covered until 2025.”
