Dutch GP: McLaren driver Lando Norris outpaced home-grown Max Verstappen to record a commanding victory by over 22 seconds at the Dutch GP on Sunday 25 August. The British driver recorded his second F1 win, adding to his victory at the Miami GP earlier in the season.

Norris had great pace in his McLaren and was driving at another level. He led the race when the lights went out at Zandvoort, but three-time world champion Verstappen took the lead at the first corner of the race.

Norris made a convincing comeback and, as Verstappen struggled for grip on his mid-track, the Briton overtook the Dutchman to take the lead. Norris did not relinquish his lead on track and the only time he lost his place was when he pitted. His team-mate Oscar Piastri led the race but the joy was short-lived. Norris regained the lead after Piastri pitted and did not relinquish it thereafter.

This was the first time a McLaren driver had won an F1 race after starting from pole since 2012. The last time a McLaren driver won from pole was Lewis Hamilton, who won the Italian GP 12 years ago.

Norris also took the bonus point for fastest lap, taking him to 26 points. Verstappen finished second and took 18 points. The Dutchman now has 295 points and leads Norris in the championship standings by 70 points.

Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari fought off the other McLaren of Oscar Piastri to take third place. Carlos Sainz, who started the race in 10th place, finished fifth ahead of Sergio Perez’s Red Bull. The two Mercedes finished seventh and eighth, with George Russell ahead of Lewis Hamilton. Pierre Gasly and Fernando Alonso took the final two points in ninth and 10th place.

Norris praised his car after the race. “It’s an amazing feeling again. I wouldn’t say it was a perfect race for lap 1, but after that the pace was very strong and the car was amazing today. I was able to get comfortable, I was able to push and get past Max, which was the most important thing, and then I just kept going from there. Honestly, it was a pretty easy race, tough but very enjoyable,” said the McLaren driver.
