Jai Shah becomes ICC president

On August 27, Jay Shah was elected as the President of the International Cricket Council (ICC). No one had applied for this position against the 35-year-old Shah. In such a situation, no elections were held and he was elected unopposed. Jay Shah will replace the current president Greg Barclay, whose term will end on November 30. He has been in this position since 2020. Shah will take over the presidency on December 1. He is currently the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Ten years of Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana completed

Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana has completed a decade. It is noteworthy that on August 28, 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched this scheme for the economically weaker section. Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana is the world’s largest financial inclusion programme i.e. it connects Indians to banks on a large scale. Under this scheme, since its inception till August 14, 2024, over 53.13 crore bank accounts have been opened, in which over Rs 2.31 lakh crore are deposited.

R Sridhar appointed assistant coach of Afghanistan cricket team

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has appointed former India fielding coach R Sridhar as assistant coach of the senior men’s team. Sridhar, 54, will join the team for the one-off Test against New Zealand and the three-match ODI series against South Africa. Sridhar will work with head coach Jonathan Trott in the Afghanistan squad.

Satish Kumar becomes the new Chairman and Managing Director of Railway Board.

Satish Kumar, an officer of the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS), will be the new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Indian Railway Board. The Appointments Committee of the Council of Ministers (CAC) has approved his appointment to this post with effect from September 1. Kumar’s tenure as Chairman of the Railway Board will last till August 31, 2025. Satish Kumar, a 1986 batch officer, will replace the current Chairman Jaya Verma Sinha. Sinha’s tenure ends on August 31.

Announcement of creation of five new districts in Ladakh

The central government has announced the creation of five new districts in Ladakh. Their names will be Zanskar, Dras, Sham, Nubra and Changthang. Currently, Ladakh has only two districts, Leh and Kargil. Before the year 2019, Ladakh was a part of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Ladakh was separated from the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir when the central government abrogated Article 370 in August 2019. Apart from approving the formation of five new districts, the Ministry of Home Affairs has directed the Ladakh administration to form a committee to take stock of various aspects related to the new districts such as headquarters, boundaries, structure, creation of posts and other aspects related to the formation of the given district.

Govindarajan Padmanabhan received the first Vigyan Ratna Award

President Draupadi Murmu presented the National Science Award for 2024 at Rashtrapati Bhavan on August 22. Govindarajan Padmanabhan, renowned biochemist and former director of the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, received the first Vigyan Ratna Award. The Government of India has started the Vigyan Ratna Award in the field of science and technology from the year 2024. In the first edition of the National Science Awards, 33 awards were given to eminent scientists in four categories – Vigyan Ratna, Vigyan Shri, Vigyan Yuva and Vigyan Team. The Chandrayaan-3 team received the Scientific Team Award in the field of space science and technology.

Indian women’s cricket team announced for World Cup

BCCI has announced the 15-player Indian squad for the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup to be held in the United Arab Emirates. Harmanpreet Kaur has been named as the captain while Smriti Mandhana has been chosen as the vice-captain. The tournament will be played from October 3 to 20 in Dubai and Sharjah. The 23-match event will feature the top 10 women’s teams in the world, who have been divided into two groups of five each. Group A includes defending champions Australia, India, Pakistan, New Zealand and Sri Lanka, while Group B includes Bangladesh, England, South Africa, West Indies and Scotland. Each team will play four group matches and the top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals. India will kick off their campaign against New Zealand. The Women in Blue will also have to play two practice matches against South Africa and West Indies.
