London capsule taxis arrive at Mumbai’s BKC

Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) will soon feature London-style capsule taxis. Sai Green Mobility will develop small-sized taxis along with Ultra PRT, the leading developers of capsule taxis at London’s Heathrow Airport. The system has 21 vehicles covering a 3.9-kilometre route, connecting Bandra and Kurla railway stations with their BKC car parks.

The project was sanctioned in March and before the official announcement, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) conducted a techno-economic feasibility study to understand the topography and combat the growing traffic woes in BKC.

According to reports, the fare for capsule taxi services has been determined through surveys conducted among car and bus users. Currently, commuters pay Rs 15.33 per kilometre for metered car rides and Rs 15.33 per kilometre for metered car rides. 30 to 40 per passenger in shared autos to reach BKC from Bandra or Kurla. Similarly, taxi users pay Rs 18.67 per kilometre, while Ola and Uber drivers often apply dynamic pricing, charging between $10 and $15 per kilometre. 80 to 100 for short trips of 2-3 km from stations to BKC.

Recently, Chief Minister and MMRDA Chairman Eknath Shinde said that the capsule taxi system will serve as a model for future urban transport projects across India, ensuring sustainable and efficient mobility for our citizens.

Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, said, “The Pod Taxi project at BKC marks a significant step towards improving urban mobility in one of the busiest business districts of Mumbai. This system will not only improve last mile connectivity but also reduce congestion and provide a modern and efficient mode of transport for daily commuters.”

BKC is known for its corporate events, but of late it has also become a hub for leisure and entertainment. As NMACC (Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre) and Jio World Drive offer various activities, the capsule taxi can add to the experience of the travellers.
