Madhya Pradesh to develop 50 offbeat destinations to attract more tourists

State Principal Secretary for Tourism and Culture Sheo Shekhar Shukla told PTI on August 31 that as many as 50 new off-beat tourist destinations will be developed in Madhya Pradesh. The secretary was speaking at a business session on the second day of the 39th annual convention of the Indian Tour Operators Association.

“Fifty new off-beat destinations are being developed in the state to cater to tourists who want to get away from the crowded places and seek peace,” Shukla said.

Earlier, Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat had said during the inaugural function of IATO on Friday that the growth rate of the tourism industry in India was expected to reach 20 per cent, hence more destinations were needed.

Shukla, meanwhile, said that over 40,000 women were being trained in the tourism sector in the state.

Madhya Pradesh has been making efforts to attract tourists to more destinations besides popular spots like Khajuraho, Jabalpur and Pachmadi.

The ambitious Cheetah project in Kuno National Park is a testament to the state’s efforts to boost tourism. However, in a setback, one of Namibia’s cheetahs named Pawan recently died in the wild.

The latest cheetah death in KNP came weeks after a five-month-old African cheetah cub, Gamini, died on August 5.

The male cheetah, Pawan, was found lying near the edge of a swollen drain amidst bushes without any movement at around 10.30 am on August 26, according to a statement issued by the office of Additional Principal Conservator of Forests and Project Lion Director Uttam Sharma.

Veterinarians were informed and further inspection revealed that the front half of the cheetah carcass, including the head, was in the water. No external injuries were seen anywhere on the body, PTI reported.

The preliminary cause of death appears to be drowning. More details will be provided after the autopsy report is released.
