Set in Imperial Japan, Shogun is an addictive samurai tale that combines political revenge, historical battles, and power dynamics. The series won 18 Emmy Awards for its first season. For those unfamiliar, Shogun follows the journey of two ambitious men: John Blackthorne, an enterprising English sailor who lands in Japan and is shipwrecked, and Lord Toranaga, a ruthless and formidable daimyo with treacherous political rivals.

Port Moody, British Columbia, Canada
The Osaka Castle scene was filmed at the old Flavelle sawmill in Port Moody, a beautiful town just 25.4 km from Vancouver. Some scenes were also filmed at the Rocky Point public pier in Port Moody.
Minaty Bay, British Columbia, Canada
When the ship is brought to Ajiro, a village ruled by Kashigi Omi, this sequence was filmed in Minaty Bay, British Columbia. This is a popular filming location that also appears as Camp Half-Blood in the Percy Jackson series.
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Vancouver, located in Western Canada, is the backdrop for many of the series’ plot points. Parts of the show were also filmed at West Vancouver’s Whytecliff Park. This park has previously been featured in famous series and films such as Legion and Siren.
Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada
Coquitlam’s magnificent landscape served as the perfect backdrop for the historical relevance of the series. The Swiss Canadian Mountain Range Association car park in Coquitlam was used to represent the village of Upper Ajiro.
London, United Kingdom
One of the scenes in the series was filmed in London. It shows Lord Yoshii Toranaga riding a horse next to a bonfire.
Japan
Not many people know this, but the entire series was originally supposed to be filmed here. However, due to COVID-19 and production delays, the crew recreated most of the sets in Canada. They did manage to film some introductory shots in Japan.
