Malayalam actor Mammootty finally reacts to Hema Committee report

Veteran Malaysian actor and film producer Mammootty has finally reacted to the findings and uproar over the Hema Justice Committee report that pointed out allegations of sexual misconduct against her peers in the entertainment industry. The three-time National Award-winning star took to Facebook and wrote a comprehensive post stating that there are no “power groups” and everyone should let the courts decide punishments instead of creating a divide.

Mammootty reacts to Justice Hema Committee report

The article translated by Mammootty read, “The developments currently facing the Malayalam film industry are the basis of this article. It is the protocol of the organisation that the actors’ association and its leadership are the first to respond to such matters. It is because I believe that opinions should be expressed only after such official responses that I have waited for so long. Cinema is a reflection of society. All the good and bad aspects of society are also present in cinema. The film industry is something that is closely watched by society. Therefore, every small and big issue that happens in this field becomes a major topic of discussion. Those working in the film industry must remain vigilant and careful to ensure that nothing untoward happens.”

He went on to say, “The Justice Hema Committee was set up by the government to study the film industry, prepare a report, suggest solutions and recommend actions in the light of certain incidents which should never have happened. The suggestions and solutions outlined in that report are welcomed and wholeheartedly supported. This is the time when all film industry associations, without any division, should join hands to implement those suggestions.”

Mammootty says there are no ‘power groups’ in the film industry

“The police investigation into the allegations that have now surfaced is going ahead in earnest. The full report of the Justice Hema Committee is also before the court. Let the police conduct their investigation with integrity and let the courts decide the punishments. There is no ‘power group’ in cinema, and the film industry is not a place where such a thing can exist. It is urged that the practical recommendations of the Justice Hema Committee report be implemented and if there are legal hurdles, necessary legislation be enacted. Ultimately, cinema must endure,” he added.

On the report of the Hema Justice Committee

Earlier this month, a redacted version of the Hema Justice Committee A report on harassment of women in the Malayalam film industry has been made public. It contained shocking accounts of harassment, exploitation and mistreatment of women professionals. The 235-page report, released after redacting the names of witnesses and accused, said that the Malayalam film industry is controlled by around 10 to 15 male producers, directors and actors who dominate and exercise control over the industry. The report by the three-member panel headed by a former Kerala High Court judge and set up by the state government in 2017, was submitted to the Pinrayi Vijayan government in December 2019 and was made public only this month.
