The Hema Justice Committee report has given courage to many actresses to speak out against the exploitation they face. However, amidst all this, several actors have also requested not to judge the entire regional industry due to the misconduct of others. Now, superstar Mammootty has given his reaction to the Hema Committee report and the sexual harassment cases in this time of crisis. He took to Facebook and supported the Hema Committee report. He also advocated for the changes needed to improve the film industry.

Cinema represents the pinnacle of society: Mammootty

Mammootty said he was waiting for the response from the actors’ association and leaders. He asked everyone to come together to improve the industry. “This section focuses on the current developments in Malaysian cinema. The organisational method requires the actors’ organisation and leadership to be the first to react. I am not going to wait for so long because I feel that as a member, I should only give my opinion after receiving such professional responses. Cinema represents the pinnacle of society. Film shows both the positive and negative aspects of society. The film industry is a subject of great interest to society. As a result, whatever happens there, big or small, will be widely discussed. Filmmakers should be cautious and vigilant to avoid negative consequences in this industry,” the caption read.

Mammootty calls for honest police investigation

The actor further wrote, “The Justice Hema Committee was constituted by the government to investigate the film industry and to come out with a report proposing responses and recommendations in the wake of an incident that should never have happened. We fully accept and support the proposals and solutions put forward in the study. It is high time that all the film industry associations work together in a uniform manner to implement them. The police are actively investigating the allegations that have been levelled. The full text of the Justice Hema Committee report is currently before the court. Let the police conduct an honest investigation. Let the court determine the penalties. There is no ‘power’ in cinema. Such things cannot exist in cinema. Justice Hema called for the practical recommendations of the committee’s report to be adopted and appropriate legislation to be passed. Ultimately, the film must survive.”

It remains to be seen whether all this can lead to a significant change in women’s safety in the workplace or whether, as in the case of “Me Too”, people will forget this incident after a while.
