West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday again wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding strict central legislation with exemplary punishments for perpetrators of rape.

She said, “I have not received any response from you on such a sensitive issue. However, I have received a response from the Minister of Women and Child Development, Government of India (vide letter No. 1/RESC/HMWCD-2024 dated 25th August, 2024), which hardly reflects the gravity of the issue raised in my letter. I feel that the gravity of the issue for the society has not been adequately appreciated by sending this generic reply.

Seven days ago, the Chief Minister of West Bengal wrote to Prime Minister Modi.

“It is appalling to see this trend. It shakes the confidence and conscience of the society and the nation. It is our bounden duty to put an end to it so that women feel safe and protected. Such a serious and sensitive issue needs to be addressed comprehensively through strict central legislation prescribing exemplary punishments for those involved in such heinous crimes,” the letter read. Banerjee also proposed setting up of special fast-track courts for speedy trials in such cases. “To ensure speedy justice, trials should preferably be completed within 15 days,” she suggested.
