Mamata writes to Modi, demanding strict anti-rape laws and speedy justice | India News

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding strict central legislation with exemplary punishments for rape perpetrators, a senior official said here.

Alapan Bandopadhyay, principal adviser to the Chief Minister of West Bengal, read out the letter at a press conference.

Banerjee, also the Trinamool Congress supremo, wrote the letter against the backdrop of nationwide protests over the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata earlier this month.

Banerjee pointed out that according to available data, nearly 90 cases of rape occur every day across the country and in many cases, rape victims are murdered.

“It is appalling to see this trend, which shakes the confidence and conscience of the society and the nation. It is our bounden duty to put an end to it so that women feel safe and protected. Such a serious and sensitive issue must be addressed in a comprehensive manner through strict central legislation prescribing exemplary punishments for those involved in such heinous crimes,” the letter reads.

Banerjee also proposed setting up special fast-track courts for speedy trials in such cases.

To ensure speedy justice, trials should preferably be completed within 15 days, he suggested.
