The Jyoti Basu government was being attacked. Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee reached Writers Building (Secretariat of the Government of West Bengal) with the victim. She sat on a dharna in front of the door of the chamber of the then Chief Minister Jyoti Basu to meet him. Mamata alleged that the culprits were not being arrested because of political connections. But Basu did not meet her.

When Basu was about to arrive and despite all the persuasion Mamta did not agree to move from there, the women police personnel dragged her and the victim down the stairs and took them to the police headquarters at Lalbazar. Mamta’s clothes were torn during this.

It is said that after this incident, Mamata had vowed that she would step into this building again only after becoming the Chief Minister. Finally, on 20 May 2011, after about 18 years, she stepped into this historic red building again as the Chief Minister.
